National Nursing Registration
CHANGE IS COMING
National Nursing Registration.
The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) is a peak body established in 1992 to facilitate a national approach to nursing and midwifery regulation. The ANMC works with state and territory Nursing and Midwifery Regulatory Authorities (NMRA) in evolving standards for statutory nursing and midwifery regulation.
Currently in Australia, each of the eight State and Territory Nurse Regulatory Authorities is represented on the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council.
The ANMC is also an authorised assessing authority for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, and undertakes skills assessments of internationally qualified nurses and midwives seeking permanent migration in Australia. On March 26, 2008, The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) signed an Intergovernmental Agreement on the Australian health workforce, creating a single national registration and accreditation system, due to come into effect on July 1, 2010.
This agreement covers ten individual health professions, including nurses and midwives.
The National Registration and Accreditation Scheme for the Health Professions consists of a Ministerial Council, an independent Australian Health Workforce Advisory Council, a National Agency, the affairs of which are conducted by the Agency Management Committee, national profession-specific boards and committees of the boards, a national office to support the operations of the scheme, and at least one local presence in each State and Territory.
The Ministerial Council appointed an Agency Management Committee in March, 2009. This committee, headed by Mr. Peter Allen, will govern the national agency.
The object of this agreement is to facilitate the development and implementation of the national registration and accreditation scheme for, among others, nurses and midwives.
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia will be established in anticipation of the commencement of the national registration and accreditation scheme.
