In the north it is bounded by the Gulf of Carpentaria, Torres Strait and the Coral Sea, with the South Pacific Ocean on the eastern shores. The total coastline is 7400 km with the Great Barrier Reef fringing the eastern coastline for more than 2000 kilometers.
Immigration is an important feature of Australian society. Since 1945, over six million people from 200 countries have come to Australia as new settlers. Migrants have made a major contribution to shaping modern Australia. People born overseas make up almost one quarter of the total population. Our culturally diverse society includes Indigenous peoples and settlers from countries all around the world.
Queenslanders enjoy an outdoor lifestyle with world class beaches and waterways, national parks, rainforests and tropical reefs.
With up-to-date technology and services, and the lowest taxes in Australia, Queensland is the preferred destination for many interstate and overseas visitors and each year.
Brisbane, the capital, is located in the south-eastern corner of the State.
